Devildriver returns with "Dig Your Own Grave"
A groove metal titan releases a rippin' new single.
Devildriver has always been an awesome band. Extremely talented members and Dez’s unique vocals overtop always made it very recognizable. I remember the first time I heard of Devildriver. My buddy TJ was laughing about “Swinging the Dead”. He was at the time, making fun of them. We later both grew to love them. Jeff Kendrick and Mike Spreitzer are both great guitar players, who are unfortunately no longer part of the band. John Boecklin was their long time drummer who moved onto join Bad Wolves was also just a total animal.
My favorite album of theirs is a toss up between “Pray For Villains” and “The Last Kind Words”. Both albums had so many epic tunes on them, and it’s hard to decide which one is better. You should really check them out in their entirety after you’re done reading this.
I do have to admit that their last 2 albums “Dealing with Demons” 1 and 2 and “Outlaws ‘til The End” didn’t quite grab me like their earlier material did, but perhaps I need to take some time to check those out on their own merits. “Winter Kills” and “Trust No One” both had some really great songs.
So let’s step up to today.
Devildriver comes back with a new lineup including former and founding bass player Jon Miller (I have a good friend who is good friends with this guy, funny enough). They release “Dig Your Own Grave”. First impression is that the mix on this track is the best I’ve ever heard from them. Not that any of their material was bad, this one just stood out. It sounds like a new band, but Dez’s vocals keep things familiar. The song opens up pretty chaotic, with the guitars doing some run on the low E tuned super low, then Dez really kicks things off with a “GET TO DIGGIN’!”
The verses are super heavy. The chorus has a a distinctly Dervildriver feel. Dez’s screaming, a guitar with some effects to lay a melody and a sinister sounding rhythm, backed by double bass. This song really pulls no punches. After the first chorus, there’s a brief lead that is pretty wicked. After the second chorus, they go into a pretty heavy breakdown, which isn’t entirely out of Devildriver territory, but it works and sounds awesome. Return to the chorus, verse riff, and close out the song with a clean guitar.
If their newest release is all at this pace, I’m stoked for it.
“Strike and Kill” will be available July 10th, 2026 marking their eleventh release. Go jam “Dig Your Own Grave” here.
Thanks for reading guys.
